would finish verifying them by Wednesday and two others said they might finish by then.
The wild card is Los Angeles County, where Registrar of Voters Conny McCormack said she had an estimated 329,000 signatures, more than any other county. She refused to predict when she would finish verifying them.
``We have a whole other week to see how we do,'' she said.
However, McCormack said that she had adequate staffing. And interviews with elections officials in other counties suggested that if enough people were put on the job, the verification process could be completed in a matter of days.
In Orange County, which had the second-largest number of signatures, about 240,000, interim Registrar of Voters Steve Rodermund said he was aiming to complete the verification process by the end of next week, but said ``sure'' when asked whether he might finish by Wednesday.
In San Diego County, which had the third-largest number of signatures, most if not all of the 211,744 signatures should be verified by Wednesday.
``We're hoping to do a pretty comprehensive report by the 23rd,'' said Tim McNamara, the assistant registrar of voters. ``Pretty much verify the bulk of signatures and get them to the state.''
